Concepts

Genre
A romantic comedy is a genre which includes romance in a humorous way.

Narrative
Typical film normally has two young lovers normally a male and a female. They tend to be likable, meant for each other but they are kept apart because they are in a complicated situation. E.g. The parents are in the way, they have different class status, or their previous partner are in the picture). But at the end they get together and get married.

Two protagonist don't believe they are made for each other, but the films give us clues that they are, one of them or both of them start to realise that they are meant for each other so either someone in the middle normally a friend may set them up together or one of them confess their love so they get together. But they don't have to get married.

Regulation
The British Board of Film Classification helps protect our audience from seeing harmful thing such as children watching sexual scenes. They are a company who self finance themselves and give films classification, therefore they give an ageing certificate to films to ensure the audience and public are protected.

Media Institutions

From our research I have gathered that there are different institutions for different film genres.

Warner Bros

Being one of the major film studios in the world, the Warner Bros specialises in producing film, television and music entertainment.  The Warner bros have produced numerous films particularly romantic comedies and comedies. This is likely because of its huge fan base to the public. The Warner bros’ have produced many romantic comedy films such as: Friends with benefits, White chicks, The proposal and etc

Paramount Pictures

Paramount pictures are one of the world’s largest movie studios which specialises in producing and distributing film and television. Paramount pictures specialise in producing films such as: Transformers and Iron Man. It also specialises in adventure films. Paramount pictures would not be the ideal production company for our film as our film is a romantic comedy therefore the Warner Bros would be more suited for it.

Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Entertainment

Columbia pictures are an American production and distribution studio.
They are part of the Columbia Tri Star Motion Picture Group which is owned by Sony Pictures entertainment.
Columbia pictures have produced and distributed many films such as: Men in black,The amazing Spiderman, Karate kid, Jack and Jill, Skyfall and etc.

The majority of these films are action or adventure. This shows that Columbia pictures specialise in producing and distributing films like these. This also proves that Columbia pictures are not suited for my film trailer as it is a romantic comedy. It also proves that the Warner Bros is a better suited production company for our film.

Representation
Characters in Romantic Comedies are presented as obvious stereotypes in society. For example an intelligent person would be presented as a geek. The dominant race in majority of films are White Anglo Faxon Protesetant. Women are usually presented as vunerable as they are looking for a relationship and looking for love. They are more dependent on men, as they want the male to make them happy.

Target Audience
The target audience for our film genre is young women and mostly couples. this is because women are usually very feminine with their feelings. Also it can relate to couples as they may be going through a similar thing or a  scenario could be that the girlfriend wants to watch the film and takes her boyfriend along. This is expanding the target market for the film. Girls aged 14+ who understand romantic comedies are the target audience for our film trailer, this is because at that age they will start getting into situations which they can relate too.
Romantic comedies are usually rated 12A which means if the child is twelve and are accompanied by an adult they are able to watch the film. The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) use these labels to regulate film and television so that it is restricted from being seen by certain ages due to the inappropriate content.
The following classification I have given my media content is 12A, as parents would need to be with their child whilst watching the film, due to scenes such as kissing or aggressive language.

Audience Research:

For our questionnaire, we asked our peers and a few teachers to help us to make certain decisions for our film trailer. We arranged 10 questions to ask our peers and received different views and opinions from each of them.

From the Questionnaire, we learnt that the male audience would like to see something more unique and 'sexy' about the female character. We almost concluded that action was a popular genre which they would like to see in our trailer.

Codes & Conventions (sharonjit)
  - Often Romantic Comedies have two protagonist which are normally a male and a female
  - They both fall for each other but there is a problem or they can't admit it
  - They eventually get together ( happy ending )
  - The target audience is normally young teenage girls and older
  - The protagonist are both very attractive
  - The trailer normally has a voice over introducing characters
  - Often set in a busy area, work/urban environment
  - Soft, romantic music
  -  Gender role for both male and females are typical stereotypes of gender
  - Some nude, sexual scenes
  - Clothing - smart, quite sexy
  - Colours associated - red, pink
   - Male Protagonist rather funny, tries to impress lady

How are we going to challenge these conventions?

Firstly we are going to challenge the conventions by making the gender roles less stereotypical, for example in the beginning of the film the girl has a masculine side as she likes to dress like a boy and does not care about the way she looks.
Also we are trying to make the target audience boys as well as females.

Mise-en-scene in RomComs
Romantic comedies are normally set in High schools, Homes, House parties, or parties such as prom.

                                          Textual Analysis

Just Wright Analysis Sharonjit
Overall the film is about a physiotherapist who loves sport.

First shot of the trailler. It is a long shot of a lady who looks formal and professional. She is the main female protagonist and her name is Leslie (although we are not told that). The shot fades in along with the sound and the shot last for two seconds.

Medium close up of the protagonist and also dialogue on top of the non diegetic sound. The character says 'Hello Densel' That is the first indiciation to a male character

The camera slowly tracks leftwards with the candle out of focus. This gives a romantic scene at the start of the trailer as the mise en scene suggest a posh restaurant.
There is also dialogue and the guy is asking the lady 'what do you do?' He is referring to her day job which leads her to background information about the protagonist. The non diegetic sound is a soft piano key in the background.

This is a jump cut from the previous shot, as she tells the gentlemen what her current job his. There is a sound bleed as she says 'Im a Physiotherapist' which is from their conversation from the restaurant.  This helped me picture the narrative of the story and help build up the story because we are introduced to the main character and a bit about her.

This again is a long medium shot of the two, showing them smiling and hitting each others glasses to greet. The shot also reinforces the Equilibrium from Todorov's theory because here everything is 'normal' and happy.

This is a medium shot of them having a conversation after dinner. The gentlemen says 'he just got out of a relationship' suggesting that he does not want to get into a relationship with the female. It is not a disruption, however we still feel sympathy for the women.

This is a shot reverse shot, Over the shoulder shot of the 'two friends' having a conversation. The lady repeats his dialogue, suggesting she is use to being let down by men. The setting in the background of trees, sets a calm and natural feel to the film.

There is a quick transition from the previous shot to this shot of the
The transition is a short duration flashframe

I like the way the miss-en-scene was presented in this shot because it seems homely. For example the step sister of the main protagonist is wearing a plain pink jumper with book and her Apple laptop out. She seems like she is sitting casually and comfortably at home. It is a realistic setting. In this shot there is dialogue about the how the date went.

This shot leads to match on action because she lifts her bag then it goes to a close up.

This is a medium close up

Again they are having a conversation about what to wear in a basketball game. There were many shot reverse shots, showing the conversation. I like the contrast between the females outfits.Leslie likes to dress comfortably and her step sister above like to dress 'poshly'

This is a crane shot of the Basketball Arena, it pans from the ceiling and pans down fast. This shows a big atmosphere

This is the first medium close up of the male protagonist. He fits the idea of a strong, handsome male character. We are also told his name by thee Commentators. His name is Scott Mcknight.

The first meeting of the two main characters are in a petrol station. I thought this was a different setting compared to other films, which helped me think about ideas for my film. That fact that he is a celebrity and doesn't know how to put petrol in his car made me laugh. While they show these shots Leslie is telling the story about how Scott did not know how to put petrol in his car.

Leslie introduces her step sister to Scott Mcknight. The scene changes from the petrol station and their house scene to Scott's house party.
The shot is a medium shot of the characters shaking hands. Howver the next shot shows the use of match on action and perhaps a two camera film shoot. As the step sister goes for a handshake it changes to a long shot of them actually shaking hands.

This is the long shot of them shaking hands. We finally hear whats Leslie's step sisters name is (which is Morgan)

Shows Scott and Morgan getting on well, and dating each other. The Paparrazi suggest how wealthy and famous Scott is.

This follows Todorov's theory as this part of the film is the disruption.Scott is injured and can no longer play basketball. The non-diegetic music cuts and a referre blows his whistle. This may be an ambient sound or a diegetic sound.

This is a long shot of the physio therapist and dialogue is used by Scott as he says 'ahh that feels so good' This makes Morgon jealous in the next shot.

Shows medium shot of Morgan being a bit jealous. Another sound bleed as she says 'some women have gaydar, I have hoedar'

Sound bleed of Morgan saying ' Leslie the job is yours' Again the shot before was a long shot and then a close shot of her picking up his leg which made the shot match on action.

Fox searchlight pictures, established in 1994. They are an etertainment industry and are involved in the production and distrubition of films.
The font colour is orange which is a unisex colour. The background also sets the film in an American city.

She leaves Scott because he can't play basketball anymore. Medium shot of her walking away. Thiss adds to the disruption of the film.

Leslie throws ice on Scott and threatens him to get up as she is his Physiotherapist. To an extent she fits Proppsttheroy as she can be seen as the helper, trying to help him stay strong and make his knee get better.

Use of split screens shows there relationship develops and Scott is trying to over come his pain. Almost gives a moral to the narrative which is 'Never give up'

Same split screen however the shot on the right changes. This is a jump cut, of him running in public trying to recover.

Sound bleed of Leslie saying
'Its long distance' and Scott scores. Ironic as it is a long distance shot. This shows things are progressing in the film

Follows Todorov's theory because everything is slowly getting better, and Leslie is the person who is repairing it.

Dialogue ' The rest of these are mine' Showing them building a bond and 'play fighting' over food. Also romantic.

Close up of the two bonding, shows they have a spark or a 'connection' reinforcing the romance in the genre. The non-diegetic music is becomes softer.

Shot reverse shot of them both gazing into each others eyes. This shot is an extreme close up of Scott.
After this shot a trasition is used it fades to black

This shows a new scene as it fades in, shows Morgan coming back because Scott's leg is better and she wants to have a relationship with him. Morgan follows this representation of women as she is dependent of Scott.

Dialogue in this medium shot of Morgan asking for another chance. This again is another disruption because there was a spark between Scott and Leslie.

Close up of Morgan asking for another chance, shows her facial expressions.

Long shot of Leslie, showing how she has become successful in Physio training.

The text slides in from a left direction quickly which a non-diegetic 'whoosh' sound.
The font is again orange which is a uni sex colour and it also shows Queen Latifahs face.

The text slides in from the right, again an orange colour, with the actor posing on his car/

The narrative shift changes as it goes back, because we found that she stops being Scotts physio as he is better. This is a long shot of them high fiving each other. Shows that they are getting along

This is the title of the film on a plain background. The colours are neutral, and the writing is simple suggesting a positive feeling.

Sound bleed dialogue from Scott saying ' How about dinner someplace..'

sound bleed continues in this show as Scott says ' How about dinner someplace nice' This shot is a high angle shot of Scott looking at Leslie come down the stairs.

Another sound bleed dialgoue is used from the character Lesslie as she responds to the question that scott asked in the shot before 'How about dinner someplace nice'

This is a shot reverse shot, again Scott is gazing into Leslie's arm. This may make females like him as a character as he has a charming effect.

'You better be packing something nice in that wallet, cause I'm not one of those salad eating chicks.' This gives it a happy feel to the end of the film, because she is basically saying she can eat a lot.

Medium long shot of Scott laughing, gives a happy feel to the genre.

This is a close shot of Leslie laughing. It can be argued that it reinforces the Equilibrium at the end of the film. After this shot, there is a push slide transition which changes  the shot to text.

The film ends with a happy note as there was laughing. The text has coming soon with further information such as the website, copyright and industries.

Mr Deeds Trailer
Mr deeds is more of a comedy film but it still consist of romance. What i liked about the trailer is that it made me smile after and made me laugh which is what a trailer is suppose to do.

I found this shot hilarious becuase it is not everyday you see a young man carrying an elderly person across the road. In a sense this sections of the trailer excites me because there is kindness amongst the society and this demonstrates it well.

This is the part where Mr Deeds finds out he is about to inherit $40 billion. This is humorous becuase this is a life changing moment for him and he doesn't quite beleive and he seems overwhelmed by the feeling.

Out of the trailer I find this clip the funniest becuase he is using a bannana and mimicking a song. Although this may look inappropriate, many people find rude things funny. Therefore I have focused on this image

Friends With Benefits
For my research I carried out a questionnaire, and I found most boys do not like romantic comedies because it is quite 'girly', however they seemed to enjoy one romantic comedy which was Friends With Benefits.

Hitch

The trailer starts off with Colombia pictures and then changes into a title sequence similar to the trailer Just go with It. However the title sequence says 'Some Guys' it is written in Dark blue, with a light blue highlight and a white background. These colours suggest happiness or fun, unlike in horror films you probably will see red and black symbolises death, horror etc.The title does not just appear it starts on the left and stretches over to the write with a soft 'whoosh' sound.

The title sequence then cuts to the first clip of the trailer where a girl throws her drink on a guy, nods and walks away. This scene fades to black with another text sequence that's says 'Just Don't Understand..' The title sequence is highlighted and stretches over as well. The next clip shows the guy putting his hands up as if he has done nothing wrong, then he says ' I just asked if it was diet!'     this clip links with the next title sequence 'Women' - The title sequence help explain the clips. It also states that the narrative which is men's relationship with women as all together the title sequence say 'Some Guys Just Don't Understand Women'

The next clip is a close up of Will Smith looking into the camera saying 'Thats were i come in' - its like he is talking to the audience directly in the trailer and telling them he understands women and can help guys. The next shot is will going up to the guy and telling him why she threw the drink at him and what she should do. He also says 'If there is any problems give me a call' and gives his card out. This reassures the audience that will knows about women and he is there to help guys. The next 3 shots shows the setting which is New York City, borough is Manhattan, where some romantic films are set.

There are many shots which reinforce the genre, for example here will smith kicks his date by accident. This makes the film funny because it was unexpected of him to kick her as he tried to get on the boat.

This shot is where Will's shirt gets trapped in the door and his shirt just rips
Overall this trailer made me laugh because there were any different scenes that made me laugh.

I was unsure how a romantic trailer started and I didn't want the film to look too romantic, therefore I analysed the first few seconds of the notebook to compare the genres.

Just Go With It Trailer

The film is distributed by Colombia Pictures which often distribute a range of genres like adventure, romance, comedy.

Happy Madison Productions is an American film company found by Adam Sandler in 1999. Therefore straight away we know the film must be comedy because most films by Happy Madison Productions are comedy.

The first shot is a title sequence which says 'Every guy' ; it is written in blue with a white background showing that the film is not a horror but instead the blue text suggest funny and a happy film.

Roughly has 100-120 shots

The Notebook  - I analysed the first couple of shots in the notebook to see how the similar genres have different openings. For example Just Go With it is different to The notebook in many ways.

The first shot is New line Cinema who is a American flim studio. The genre that is often associated with them is romance, fantasy, adventure but also comedy as they merged with the Warner Bros.

This is the first shot in the trailer which sets the a calm and loving atmosphere reinforcing the genre as the music has a soft piano tone. The shot may indicate where the film is set but the setting might also show a sense of purity.

A voice over starts 11 seconds into the trailer.
“Noal was a country boy” The voice over fits in with the shots as you can see Noal is in the country side, therefore he is narrating the story for the audience.

Romantic trailers are different because they set there scene and have more of a calm atmosphere. The voiceover suggest that it is a love story straight away. Almost sounds like a fairytale.

                                                                        Music Video
As well as trailers, music videos also has inspired us with different romantic couple shots. The types of music videos we looked at were romantic songs.

From Trey Songs video Simply Amazing.

This type of shot can help us in our trailer because it can suggest that the couple are in love and they will always be there for one another. This shot shows that the guy is looking after his girlfriend and as its only them two on the beach it seems like or can be interpreted that they are a strong couple against everyone.

The shot of the couple kissing shows how in love they are
The shot with them riding the bikes together shows how much fun they have together and how they race each like a 'cute' couple.

The shot with them under the covers really inspired us because the girl looks under the duvet first and Trey songs comes after showing that they will always be there for each other. This be a good shot in our trailer showing how romantic the couple is.

 Heart Attack video Trey Songs

The first shot is half a second long, shows the couple taking pictures together but then the shot changes to Trey Songz by him self then back to a long shot of the couple taking the picture.

This final shot is towards the end of the song is when the couple is in hospital together, we thought this could relate to our trailer because they are still together no matter what's happened. Also the girl is blurred yet they are still together in love.

What we found?
The best romantic comedies are the ones that make you laugh and smile, and not too emotional. Also the song changes half way in trailers from a slow pace song to a fast one as the narrative starts of serious but later funny.

Shaana Textual Analysis

Justin Bieber - As long as you love me - Textual Analysis: Shaana
Although for our coursework our task is to create a film trailer we also researched into some music videos which have given us ideas for our own coursework.
Below are some screenshots of then and how this has helped us:

The shot above shows the conversation between the girls father and the boy, this has inspired us for our film trailer as the relationship between the boy and his father affects the boys relationship with his girlfriend.
We challenged the media convention of a typical father and daughter relationship where the father is protective for his daughter's well being, the table's have been turned as for our film trailer we made the boys main lead and his father as he is protective over his son being with the main girl worried that she may be after the families money.

These 'love' shots from this music video show the chemistry between the two characters.
This inspired us to re-create our own love scenes for our film trailer, by making them more effective through our own work.

The shots in this music video vary from 100 - 150 shots, however these differ slightly to trailers as the shots tend to be much faster compared to the shots in film trailers, this is because there is more speech and dialogue with the scenes then music videos do.

SKILLS: Sharonjit

Producing music
Producing the music was a big challenge, as a I wasn't familar with any programmes which created music, therefore my research I looked for different programmes but found most of them were too complicated to get the grip of. I researched in google what particular softwares was the best.

                                                                                 What inspired me about Garageband?
Garageband for some reason was not my first choice as I thought it may be too simple for creating a mellow tune, however I decided to check on Youtube what other people have produced from Garageband and found a song which changed my whole opinion about Garageband. The song inspired me as it related to my genre 'romantic comedy', therefore i decided to use Garageband. The link above is the link to the RnB song I found on Youtube.

                Garageband Tutorials.

As i didn't know much about garageband I used Youtube tutorial. On the left hand side is a screen shot of a tutorial video I used from Youtube. It was useful because it showed me the basics and outline of garageband.

Final Cut Skills (Sharonjit)

Split screen tutorial
This video helped me learn how to do split screens in final cut. i found it very useful because straight away the presenter got to the point about how to do it and how to scrop a moving image.

Text tutorial
This tutorial helped me learn how to add text in final cut, but it also helped me how to add animations and how to change the colour and font.  I found this tutorial very helpful as at the start I did not know how to add text, but at the end I learnt more about text.

Adjusting music tutorial
This helped me a lot because I learnt about the 'pen'  tool here, which linked to me fading in and out music, text and moving images.

Slow motion video

Useful Editing tips and Research about trailers
  • Some trailers don't have many effects they just jump from shot to shot
  • Try go with the pace of the music and try make your shots go with the music
  • A trailer should structure the film
  • The Trailer should not give away the whole narrative
  • know the theme and feeling you want your viewer to feel
  • Don't make the length of the trailer too long
  • Try to sell the story
  • Don't put too much text
  • Set a budget for your trailer
  • Keep the tone going
  • Work on the music
  • Introduce the main parts ( can include todorovs theory)
  • Introduce the characters

Skills  -  Shaana
Garageband:
For our main task, the film trailer needed music. I researched into using Garageband as it was available on the IMacs so it was easy access. Also I have had experience using Garageband before on my IPad however the Macbooks are slightly different and I researched and found out it was more challenging to use Garageband on the Macbooks as it had a bigger variety and wider range in its instruments and editing techniques.
To understand how to use Garageband for the Macs I watched a few tutorials on YouTube.
(Show printscreens on youtube)
I found many things challenging when watching the tutorials, I got confused when using different instruments and complying them with one another. However I came to the conclusion after practising my demonstrations on Garageband it became easier to use.
I then constructed a few demonstrations with my partner.

Above are a few demonstrations myself and my partner constructed so that we could get used to using Garageband. Our research was helpful, this is proven as we allowed ourselves to practice until we got used to the software.
Final Cut Pro:
For our main task we wanted to use different software for editing our film footage from our previous coursework. For our AS coursework my partner and I both used IMovie to edit our film footage. We wanted to challenge ourselves and our ability by using a more up scale and professional editing software.
We found in our research that many video-graphers who video weddings and functions use Final Cut Pro to edit their film footage. Knowing this we investigated into using the software ourselves:
Below is a few screenshots from some of the tutorials we watched and of the work we did.

These are some of the skills we applied to our own coursework which we had seen from the Youtube tutorials

We were able to learn a few skills which we hope to later apply in our work

IMovie for IPad:
Despite using IMovie for our previous AS coursework, I wanted us to challenge ourselves by using a wide range of different software’s and programmes for our work so that we were able to create different products.
As I was familiar with using IMovie on the Macbooks I decided to download the Application available for IPad.
I was still confused with how everything was set out, the layout the options and the size being a lot smaller I decided to watch a YouTube tutorial.

Watching this tutorial made it easier for me to use this software as I was able to identify were everything was set out and if I was still confused I could replay the video.
