In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge media conventions?
Trailer
How we used media conventions:
Mise-en-scene: We used media conventions as we tried to show a party scene. Most Romantic comedies have party scenes for example Just Wright did and so did Just Go with it.
Mise-en-scene: We used media conventions as we tried to show a party scene. Most Romantic comedies have party scenes for example Just Wright did and so did Just Go with it.
We used another common setting that occured in Romcoms, which is the bedroom scene. In this scene there is more of an emotional side as Tara tells her background story to Joe.
One of the conventions were the male character tries to impress the girl he likes. This shot Joe tries to help Tara fix her bike, and tries to impress her with his skills.
We also used an attractive smart male protagonist to try and gain an female audiene.
In this long shot, we used a delicate piano non-diegetic sound to show the connection the main protagonist have.
The characters fall for each other, however there is a problem stopping them from being with each other. In out trailer the dad is the problem as he wants to protect his son. This is a medium shot of the dad shouting.

For the text we tried to use neutral, unisex colours to appeal to a male and female audience.
Following Todorov's Theory
This is a long shot of the two main protagonist spending time together. This follows Todorov's theory as, this part of the trailer is the Equilibrium, where everything is normal and happy.
This shot begins to create the narrative structure which reflected on social class background, causing a disruption in a relationship. We tried to show this disruption by creating a storyline about the dad wanting his son to take over his business and stay away from the working class. This follows Todorov's stage about the disruption.
However from my trailer research, I found after the disruption the Equilibrium comes straight after. But there is no attempt to repair. We put this in our trailer as well, therefore we used the same structure to form the narrative, but we did not want to put the attempt to repair because the trailer is suppose to be a 'teaser' of the film.
We were going to challenge the idea by adding more action towards the end of the trailer by using the Enigma code which was Tara being run over and then the audience would want to watch to find out who did it. But this would have made the film more action and away from the genre, therefore we decided to take it out and leave the film finishing with a happy note like usual conventions.
How we challenged/Developed:
We challenged the way they met. Normally people meet at clubs, however our protagonist met in the toilet. This also made it a funny element in the school to reinforce the genre.
At times Tara was presented as a typical women who was innocent. However we wanted to present her as a character who challenged these stereotypes in some parts of the film. The medium close up on the left shows her getting into joggers which shows more of a masculine side to her. It also shows that she feels rather comfortable in joggers. This shot however also shows match on action we used a jump cut to her putting on her joggers from a different position.
For the poster we didn't challenge many of the conventions as we wanted to make our website simple. Referring back to the website I looked at which was ' Friends with Benefits' the poster had many interactions such as sound and a video from the actors. Our website has interactions but not on the homepage. For example we have a page called video clips and on that page are interactions of the actors speaking about their view of the film.
We have a similar convention which are hyperlinks to social networking sites, which helps promote the film Our website does advertise our film as we have a promotion advertising posters which relate to the film.
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Including a website as one of the forms of advertisement I have chosen to use has benefited the commercialism of my trailer, as it has allowed me to target a wider and more diverse audience. The use of websites will attract more people to watch my trailer as my website can be accessed globally.
Another advantage of using a website is that it provides a two-way communication market. This allows users for example, 'Oscars TV & Co' to give feedback on my website and my trailer simply by clicking a button. This provides quick interaction between the audience and myself which is very useful. In addition, my website includes the use of hyperlinks which allows users to directly access/open the official page of the film on social networking sites for example, 'Facebook' and 'Twitter'. This is an effective feature as the use of social networking sites allow the audience to connect with the trailer and share and comment on it. This is an effective way of gaining an even wider audience as millions of people of all different ages and backgrounds have accounts set up all over the world. Social networking sites can also be used to target specific individuals who have similar interests to the genre of my trailer which is a romantic comedy. This can be done by displaying the official page of the film on these individuals timelines. This will further promote the trailer.
Another form of advertisement that I have chosen is the use of posters. I have chosen to use posters as they have allowed me to appeal to a more local audience. Posters are generally displayed in local cinemas, train stations, and on buses. This is a huge advantage as people use public transport on a day-to-day basis and so people are likely to notice the posters that have been displayed.
Furthermore, posters are adaptable as they can vary in sizes and can be customised so they can be displayed anywhere. This will benefit intuitions. The poster I have created for my trailer is very eye-catching which is another advantage with the bold font size and contrasting colours which allow the title to stand out. My poster also advertises and promotes the website which enables an even larger audience to view the trailer.
The combination of both the website and the poster have similarities as I have used similar fonts and background colours on both. This will ensure that the audience know exactly what film is being advertised and that they are both from the same marketing campaign. This will help to promote and establish the new film trailer.
Another similarity between the two forms of advertising is that both methods are cost effective. The website I created did not cost anything and was easily customised without paying a huge fee. Similarly, the posters I created were cost effective in terms of printing as they printed in bulk which saved me a lot of money.
What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
For our audience feedback we interviewed many students from school to see their thoughts on our trailer.
I concluded that not many males liked the trailer as it didn't have enough action/thriller. I think the film came across as a 'chick flick' to the male audience. Also a few people disliked the actors.
We posted our video on twitter, and a few people left positive comments.
Some twitter uses 'retweeted' or 'favored' the post showing that they were interested.
We posted our film on Youtube to gain a wider audience world wide.
Audience
Top demographics
- Female, 13-17 years
- Male, 13-17 years
- Male, 45-54 years
The top demographics shows us by age who viewed our trailer. This is helpful because the target audience did view our trailer which were teenagers.
If I was to redo my trailer, I would change the setting to an urban setting and add more male violence to attract more of a male audience. For example I would create a storyline about a teenage boy involved with a violent gang who threaten his girlfriend if he wishes to leave.
How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
For this question I have created a video which I created on Final Cut Pro.
